You seemed to be getting more connections with the newer kernel. Looks like you have two variables going: Newer kernel and the Gobi loader thing.

Can you eliminate one or the other or does a successful connection take both? I'm kinda thinking now about downloading xubuntu with the newer kernel to see if I can get a connection there since you've had some success with it. Warm restart in XP with NW connection, to 9. Hopefully I can get a connection without the Gobi loader thing as I don't know how technically to deal with it.

Upon warm booting into xubuntu 9. This is as far as I've been able to progress, but am quite happy that I have the modem working without using Windoze to load the firmware.
